DO have a driver to take you home (A MUST: no taxi or walking home).

Preparation for Colonoscopy (EXTENDED 2-DAY PREP)

1-Two Days Before your appointment you need to drink _________oz. Of Magnesium Citrate. This is over the counter and does not need a prescription. DO NOT GET CHERRY FLAVOR!!

2- Have only clear liquids immediately after you take the Magnesium Citrate and for two nights before the procedure. These are liquids, which you can see through if held up to the light. They CANNOT be red (Cranberry juice, red grape juice). Examples of clear liquid include apple juice, white grape juice, tea, water, 7 up, Sprite, ginger ale, bouillon or strained chicken broth. You may have lemon or lime Jell-O and lemon or lime Popsicles or sorbet. Please avoid poppy seeds and sesame seeds for one week before the exam.

3- Two 1.5 oz. Bottles of Fleet Phospho Soda Buffered Saline Laxative can be purchased at a local pharmacy without a prescription.

4- If your Examination is before 10 a.m. in the morning, then you
will take your laxatives at 1 p.m. and 7 p.m. THE DAY BEFORE. If your examination is after 10 a.m. in the morning, then you will take your laxatives at 7 p.m. the evening before and 6 a.m. the morning of the exam. Each bottle should be mixed in 4 oz. Of ice cold Sprite and we recommend sucking on a lemon wedge before drinking the laxative to cover the salty after taste. Please drink this slowly (5 10 min) otherwise, you may get nauseated or dizzy Drink plenty of liquids during the day. Be sure to stay at home and close to the bathroom.

5- You may drink clear liquids until two hours before your exam.

6- Apply Vaseline lubricant around the anus and buttocks to prevent irritation after you take each laxative.
IMPORTANT: NO ASPIRIN OR NSAIDS (ANTI INFLAMMATORY DRUGS) FOR ONE WEEK BEFORE THE EXAM, unless instructed otherwise by your physician e.g. (IBUPROFEN, MOTRIN, ADVIL, ALEVE, EXCEDRIN, etc.)TYLENOL IS O.K. A Partial list of such medicines will be provided.

7- No iron pills for three days before your colonoscopy.

8- You will need a ride home after the procedure due to the sedation. Patients are NOT allowed to take a taxi home by themselves.
