MARTHA E. HIERRO, M.D.
In the field of gastroenterology, Dr. Hierro is what many would call a rare find. She is one of the few female gastroenterologists in Santa Monica and the surrounding areas. Her reputation has earned her a large male and female patient following. In 1987 Dr. Hierro completed her medical degree at the UCLA School of Medicine. Between the third and fourth years of medical school, Dr. Hierro began the master´s program at the UCLA School of Public Health. At the time her focus was on health services research. Subsequent to here enrollment in the School of Public Health, she completed her internal medicine internship and residency at Harbor UCLA Medical Center. In 1990, she went on to attend UCLA´s Gastroenterology Fellowship Program in Digestive Diseases. In 1992, the American Board of Internal Medicine certified Dr. Hierro in internal medicine, and five years later certified her in gastroenterology.
As a graduate of the UCLA School of Medicine, she commits herself to educating
medically underserved communities and bridging the gap of healthcare disparities.
During Colon Cancer Awareness month in March of 2002, she was featured in a ninety
minutes video sponsored by the National Alliance for Hispanic Health, which was
broadcast entirely in Spanish. Dr. Hierro is an active member of the Medical Executive
Committee at St. John´s Health Center (JSHC) in Santa Monica. In 2004, she
was elected Treasurer by SJHC´s Medical Staff. In past year she has served
on the Bio ethics Committee and Transfusion Committee. Her professional affiliations
include the American Gastroenterology Association, American Medical Association,
American Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, American College of Gastroenterology,
and American College of Physicians.
Dr. Hierro´s gastrointestinal insight is further enhanced by her husband off nineteen years, who is a Pediatric Gastroenterologist and Clinical Professor at UCLA. As a devoted mother of two, Dr. Hierro successfully manages the rigors of private practice and motherhood. She has proven to be a paragon of excellence for working mothers. Outside of patient care, Dr. Hierro enjoys volunteering her time at her children´s school and educating the public on colon cancer and digestive disorders by speaking at various healthcare seminars
